Lycanthropes: The general term for a werecreature of any kind. “Lycanthropy” is the typical term for the condition of being a werecreature—some believe it a disease, others see it as a curse. There are many kinds of lycanthropes, usually predatory animals other than birds or fish—any person who transforms into a bird or a fish is usually regarded as ‘cursed’ since only a few cases have ever been discovered. Once in a while a child is born with lycanthropy, but it is a very rare occurrence, since it requires a human mother and a nonhuman father, and a conflict of supernatural power seems to make it very hard for anything but a werecreature to be impregnated by another werecreature. Since human weres are unable to resist the draw of the moon (with very few exceptions,) it is impossible for female weres to carry a child to term. But no matter how rare it is, it does occasionally happen that a human mother carries a werecreature child. It is theorized that they are more powerful than other human weres because they have an innate connection to their animal form. During the last trimester in utero, the child gains the ability to shift forms (which does not injure or pain the mother) and will drift in and out of their animal form until birth. They will bear some sign of so much uncontrollable shifting, although if they are very strong, it will only be a minor physical difference.

example: Logan, born with lycanthropy. His eyes are the resulting change.

Werewolf (noun): Somebody who is believed to have been transformed into a wolf, or who is believed to be able to change into a wolf and then back into a human being. The dictionary definition of a ‘werewolf’ is correct in describing what a human “wolf” would go through. But there are also werewolves whose original form is the wolf, who are called the “loup.” They have little in common when it comes to power, and many theorize it is because a human werewolf is typically fighting to gain control of his or her animal form, whereas the loup is always in sync with their wolf side. Human werewolves are usually organized into packs with a single alpha who may be either male or female (although female alphas are rare, and usually called something different, depending on the heritage of the pack) and whose word is final law. Although werewolf packs usually employ a team of commanders (also called various things from pack to pack), they are all ultimately outranked by the alpha. Loup packs are organized exactly as a typical wolf pack, with the exception that all members are allowed to raise offspring, and when a new alpha is gained he or she does not kill off the previous alpha’s whelps. Loup are considerably smarter than average wolves, since they are of equal intelligence to their human counterparts. A werewolf pack will occasionally ‘adopt’ a small pack of loup, since they are hard to find and rarely leading contented lives. Loup also do not need to transform on the full moon, as human werewolves must; in this and several other regards they are considered more powerful than human wolves. In other countries, the loup are often hunted or destroyed on sight—they are identifiable to a trained eye as communicating much differently amongst themselves than regular wolves, as well as usually being somewhat larger—so the exact number of loup packs throughout the world is unknown. Since most loup packs therefore live in the wild, it is unlikely they are even aware of the use of their human form, and probably change only a handful of times throughout their lifetime.

example: Xander, human with lycanthropy. Chancy, one of the loup.

Unicorn (noun): A mythical animal usually depicted as a white horse with a single straight spiraled horn growing from its forehead. In one sense, this common definition is true. But there is another side to the unicorn than just an altered horse. Like lycanthropes, they have the ability to switch between two forms, but they are not controlled by any element of nature, nor do they fully transform from either horse or human. Legend says a persecuted witch exacted revenged on a small village by inflicting them all with an irrevocable curse. They would be neither fully human, nor fully horse, for the remainder of their lives; thus, the unicorn was born. In their human form they somewhat resemble a cross between satyrs (humans with goat legs) and centaurs (horse bodies with human torsos) in that they appear from the waist up to be human, but their legs and feet are replaced with thick legs and solid hooves. Though covered in silvery hair, the legs would not be so difficult to hide if it weren’t for the size of the shiny gray hooves, which prevents any clothing of standard design to be worn. They have white hair with the same iridescent quality as their equine shape; in horse form, they are consistently silvery white, with the same polished hooves. And naturally, they also bear a single spiraling horn from between their eyes.
Over the years since, unicorns have tried all manner of methods to remove these alterations. No hair dye lingers more than a day in human form, and removal of the horn in horse form is just as temporary. The next day, or the next time they choose to transform, their original appearance is restored.
Some say that after the village of unicorns was discovered, they were enslaved; others believe they were ashamed and fled immediately to European forests. One way or the other, they came to inhabit deep woods hardly visited by man. It was here that their mythological status was born. Although some swear to have seen unicorns grant wishes or cause miracles, there is no record of any evidence, nor any testimony of such possibilities by the unicorns themselves. Some attribute this to the small numbers and secretive nature gained following the European vampires’ ‘protection’ of their kind: when humans began to hunt them for sport, the ancients removed all they could find from the forests and secluded them for generations.
Although they may breed with either horse or human, depending on their form, and bear offspring of either kind, those of equine parentage are noticeably slower and physically weaker. Half-human children, on the other hand, are as bright as any human, and as strong as any horse. Those captured by the vampires bred only in human form, and only rarely, dwindling their numbers even more though raising the overall intelligence of the race.
When America became known as a haven to all preternaturals, and ancient vampires began to lose some of their power base, it happened that the unicorns were freed. Some claimed this was as a result of a rescue, though others assume the vampires simply couldn’t care for them any longer. Regardless, unicorns found their way to the New World just like all the other races, and in modern times average a population of one for every two or three states, limited to the northern forested regions. Most migrate to Canada’s open spaces until winter, when they work their way back south. Supposedly there are a few small gathering places to hide out the bitter weather, but none has ever been confirmed.
Another aspect of the unicorn’s curse is that they must eat nearly as much as a horse regardless of what form they take. They have a heightened sense of taste that limits their foods to a small number of strictly herbivorous diets, and in human form they often eat an excess of grain, fruit, and nuts. All are vegetarian by necessity—something in the taste of any kind of meat, even fish, offends them—and most refuse to eat any animal products at all.
In the 21st century, unicorns have migrated all around the world, although only a small handful are known to live outside of Europe and North America. Despite their rural homes they are notoriously intelligent and take great pride in teaching their children to be literate; with today’s society, they are usually being educated in mathematics and science as well, often using the Internet to their advantage.
No doctor has ever examined a unicorn; nothing is known about their immunities or allergies, though it is evident they have none of the super strength or heightened senses that lycanthropes possess (werecreatures have their original breed’s sense of taste).
